kde is pretty nice but very laggy on old hardware (specifically 14yo thinkpads running 100% free software without a dedicated GPU)

What? I jumped ship from gnome because it was just fucking unusable, worse than using Winbloat outright. So using gnome was besides the point of installong linux. KDE runs down like oil in comparison.
