google's shifted from a search engine, to an advertising company, to an orwellian tool of the 14 eyes hellbent on destroying the internet. everyone is vaguely aware of this but will not (or more accurately cannot) stop using their services.
we assume that the government will step in and regulate them if it gets to be "too much of a problem", but the government has the most to gain from them growing bigger. the % of global browser traffic originating from google.com search results is staggering, any party who could tweak those results could manipulate the narrative at an unprecedented scale.
