the voltages in them will fade after around 8-16 years. Simply plugging them in for a bit even if no file is moved will cause the os on the device to reflash all of the voltages.

Sounds unlikely. That's trading performance for reliability, and SD cards are sold by performance, not reliability. I would read the whole card with dd to force it to reflash when needed.

I keep mine in a jar under my bed, still works
