I imagine the problem is that it was designed when the internet wasn't a thing. You can cancel unauthorized transactions, so it was expected that, in the case that a stranger used your account to pay for something you did not want, you could automatically cancel it.

In VLC's case, however, they get so many unauthorized transactions that they can't bother to cancel all the leddit gold purchases one by one.

at least here in central europe, I pay my phone and electricity bill with that (IBAN / SEPA direct debit, not sure how to translate). might as well put someone else's IBAN and name in the bank info fields, nobody ever checks unless the money transfer fails.

I think only a few services really check, like Paypal and some real-name BTC exchanges send you a few cents first to confirm your bank account before allowing automatic debits

Credit card scammers do this all the time. Casinos pretend they care, but they make a lot of money in fees in the process, so they actually facilitate it. Specially in eastern Europe.
