/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.
>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin to replace Netflix, nextcloud or seafile to replace Googlel, ampache to replace spotify, the list goes on and on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.
>Why should I have a home server?
/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your Any Forums skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

bump cause old one about to die
wanted to get a nas but i hear people tell saying to avoid synology because its overpriced garbage. is it really that bad? i mean sure, the DS418 costs like 400 eurobucks with no drives included, but what alternatives are there that isnt just buying some old office pc?
Yes its bad. You get more value out of your money building your own and just installing a linux os on it. Truenas is basically synology aka beginner mode for server admins.
if you have money to blow they're well built. that being said an $80 optiplex will work the exact same, a $60 pi knockoff will work, a $40 thinkpad motherboard will work in a pinch (pic related). no reason to spend hundreds on a synology unless you have cash to blow
all prebuilt nas are overpriced for what you get, the question is if it's worth it for you to not have to build your own or not.
if you're a tech retard, go for a synology. you overpay but it just werks.
If you're comfortable with building and configuring your own, go with the DIY route.
Spent most of this evening trying to get jekyll running in a container without much success.
What do you use to host document your projects /hsg/?
for in ded thread
Thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi 4 for a Kodi media center system. Is there any reason to install LibreELEC over regular Raspbian? Seems like the latest Pi shouldn't need a bare minimum OS.
>Tried Docker again.
I just don't understand why anyone enjoys this method. Even in the homelab feels more limited than a VM.
On to better news. Expanded the vmware farm to 5 host now. That's going well.
It's overpriced, your locked into the hardware they use. (no customization). $400 can get you a nice used server on e-bay with lots more power and options. Then you can spec it out from there as you see fit.
Don't listen to poor fags. What is your time & data worth? Are you THAT interested in how to get it running DIY or do you just want it to fucking work so you can continue with other plans?
It's great software and it comes at a price. I have 3, I know.
I'm glad HDD sizes are finally creeping up to my storage use. Currently I've got round 21TB. Drives are now 18TB. Be nice to fit all my data on a single drive again. Which hasn't been the case since 1997..(when my desktop had a 2.1GB hdd).
no less than you need to be alive pedo scum
>spent 1 hour debugging why something auth wasn't working for service i just setup

don't listen to this guy --> here is what I do, sign up for oracle/jewgle/azure/aws cloud. get yourself a free tier compute instance, ubuntu 20. Install docker, wireguard, and nginxproxymanager. Point your domain name A record at your compute instance IP. make sure you set up a wildcard * so you can use subdomains without having to fuck with your records more than once. Then set up a wireguard tunnel between your cloud server and your raspi running your docker containers. After that's done you can go into nginxproxymanager and create proxys from NPM to your PI. say your pi wireguard IP is 10.0.1.2 and you're running portainer on your pi, you can set up a subdomain like portainer.poopsex.com with the IP address of 10.0.1.2 and port 9443. the nice thing about npm is letsencrypt comes standard, so you can created ssl certs for all of your subdomains.
it took me years to realize how much you can do with docker vs vmware. I used to run every different service I had in a seperate VM over 4 different esxi servers I had and now that I've finally figured out how to use docker properly I've reduced my servers down to 1 with 1 spare
I'm still unsure whether I should build a dedicated NAS or stack the hard drives into the gaming/media/everything machine and put the whole thing into another room.
It basically comes down to it being two long cables (DP and USB) instead of one (Ethernet).
No, but I sure love having it. Hundreds of TB's of data at my fingertips. Feels extremely comfy knowing that even if some website goes down or some assblasted mod starts purging content, It wont matter because I'll have everything I need.
ZERO trust in online services is the way to go.
Mergerfs + snapraid on zfs
Has anyone done it?
it takes an hour tops to set up openmediavault you tech retard
>oooooh, you sure showed me user!

retard
I noticed they make fast ECC ram these days. Should I go for it (16GB for 150€) or is it not worth it?

what about docker feels limited?
saved hundreds on a NAS recently by just stuffing HDDs into the desktop workstation. no complaints and nothing has to be transferred over the network to be transcoded. you can just yank em out when you build a real NAS
>mad cause Im right
