Why did you choose the country notorious for having some of the lowest IQ and least advanced technology of all Asian nations?
I read a book written by a doctor who worked with exclusively Cambodians for years and he basically said they were so unintelligent it was infuriating to try and have a conversation.

I changed jobs from Siem reap to a local town called sisophon. But in Siem Reap there's a lot of nice bars that are expat/foreigner friendly. Sok San Rd has tons of nice bars, but I personally am always at a place called Jungle Burger Bar because they have the best westernized food in Cambodia bar none

To add to this, cambodians are not dumb, or low IQ. As adults, they are not as smart as other Asian nations, but this is because of how batshit backwards their education system is. There's no incentive to study a lot and try really hard here at the schools because when the parents are paying for their kids education, the teachers or principals will pass their kid even if they fail because at the end of the day, it's a business.

The students I work with are extremely smart. The doctor you're talking about probably didn't have any experience in the Cambodian education system to begin with. This is the same country that will give a woman a bachelors degree if she gets pregnant while attending college. It has nothing to do with being low IQ (which they aren't.) It's entirely based on their terrible education culture here.

Ive been to both Cambodia and Laos so I speak from first hand experience. Laos is definitely a couple decades behind Cambodia in terms of technological and architectural advancement. Laos is cool to visit to see the mountains, but I'd definitely never would want to live there. Way too third world for my taste even as someone living in Cambodia.

Yeah pretty much everything's open again. Some shops went out of business during covid but there's a lot of new places too. Hookers are easily available sure. Very easy to find in Phnom Penh. In Siem reap, they're also easy to find if you're actively looking for them. But in Phnom Penh it's definitely easier to find them because, there, they're basically in your face when you're not even looking for them

He probably visited Phnom Penh which I personally hate but some other expats love. Phnom Penh is what I would compare to a very big indian or african city. Grunge, and shadyness and all. It's definitely a culture shock especially if you haven't traveled to a lot of poorer countries. This is only Phnom Penh though. Places like Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, etc. don't have the "look over your shoulder every second" vibe that Phnom Penh does. That city honestly feels like a different country than the rest of Cambodia. Any other town or city in Cambodia you literally see 50 year old white women walking down the street at night and it's perfectly safe. Even Phnom Penh is safe against violence. But you'll definitely get your shit snatched or scammed to hell if you don't have your street smarts in that city.

You will one day user it's honestly a pretty cheap vacation. The only thing that is expensive is the flight. Siem Reap and Koh Rong are must-sees. Unless you're one of those "I wanna see the grungy side of the country" travelers, I'd advise just stay away from Phnom Penh. There's tons of stuff to do there with good food and places to party, but it's honestly a shithole city that feels completely different than the rest of Cambodia. Scenery, culture, and all. But Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, etc. Are all great and very safe places to visit with very friendly people.
