i read a book on hikikimoris and it's actually fairly common in japan, like slighty male dominance in numbers but something like 60/40 gender split
i imagine in the west it isnt as common though

Yeah, even some few real ones do exist.
There are nominally quite a lot, but when "having a wagecuck bf" is mostly deemed a somewhat socially acceptable profession and can not really be counted as "our" sort of NEET life, the lines get blurry.

First of all we need to separate neet from hiki.
Hiki is a shutin in complete isolation, neet just means that person is not engaged with official structure of society (no job or education ). Housewives are technically neets. I dare to say that there are more neet females in the world than males.
Hiki women are like 0.9% . They do exist, but women are pressured more by family to go out of the woods snd mothers are way less eager to babysit a grown up daighter than son, while a bf may instead pick up on babysitting. So for a woman to be hiki many more stars have to align. The socialising process they go through when they grow doesnt really allow going hiki much.

I saw a documentary about hikis where a group of them had a support group, and at least one of them was female. It kind of amazed me how these people were legitimate shut ins for years and ended up giving it a shot and reentering society, some of them being 30+ years old

A male neet tends to be relatively healthy. Might be fat or scrawny and completely out of shape, but doesn't actually have anything wrong with him. I have heard the weirdest fucking shit from female neets. Random body aches and pain that go on for months at a time, will have several weird quirks like being unable to clench their fist and claiming to have such a sensitive gag reflex that they can't eat properly among other things and will have self-diagnosed every mental illness that they've heard of.

What's more, they're downright scared to go outside. They seem to believe that if they go outside they'll be raped or anxiety will overwhelm them and they won't be able to get back home. I've never heard of a male neet having this problem.
