the rebuilds are absolute shit (besides 1.11 just being a rehash), but 3.0+1.0 wasn't bad. at least compared to 2.22 and 3.33

Guy like me? I personally prefer the ending of the original show and the show in general over End of Evangelion. While EoE provides some closure in regards of the main story and is a great, gutwrenching and touching experience, I still find episode 25 and 26 to be some of the most interesting pieces of current-day media.

I am never watching the rebuild movies. End of Evangelion is my favorite piece of media and I couldn't stand to think it might have been retroactively tarnished by new bullshit.

The thing about Evangelion is it's actually a musical.
If you took the music out of Evangelion, it doesn't work, same thing Trey Parker points out with Michael Bay films.
It's a bit more sophisticated because Anno is a bit more sophisticated, because post-war Japanese culture is a bit more sophisticated, but it's still a mecha series for teen-age Japanese boys.
