A big part of it is just conformity to 'ordinary' sexual roles. There are gay guys that are attracted to masculine characteristics, and they tend to go both ways when it comes to that and they tend to pair off with one another. Then there's another kind of gay which is effeminate and fundamentally wants to fulfill the submissive, ordinarily feminine dynamic. Lots and lots of them about. Then there's a smaller subset of men that are interested in fulfilling the dominant, traditionally masculine role but with a male partner not a female. Not so many of those around.
