Other sites are much better in gathering information, formatting(not reddit, I can barely understand that place), expect a high standard of discussion, and such. This can help filter out a lot of shitters who only want to shit up threads, start fights, and post shit most of the community wouldn't want to see. Most people don't want to see racism in place about a little girl show or a stamp collector forum, for instance. Anonymity has its drawbacks like easier false flagging and having to take's someone words for things. Obviously these are problems everywhere, but different in imageboards like this
On the other hand, this has a higher barrier to entry, there are much more frequent circlejerks. Everyone wants attention(natural and common for humans, but worse when everyone has names and upvotes), you have to keep on your toes. On imageboards, if you fuck up, you can just go back in the shadows of anonymity. On traditional forums, people will be judging everything you say. Sometimes you don't want to fucking debate everything with someone and you just want to tell them to fuck off and die. On imageboards like here, you don't have to make an account, you can just make a shitty thread or 40, talk about how you want to masturbate to loli, and call it a day. But don't expect anything better than that more than once in a blue moon.
The downside is that people treat this place like a bathroom, so it's a lot of shitflinging, and the people that actually take it seriously are aids riddle cruising fags or heroin addicts shooting up in the restroom. Aka shitflingers or someone trying to turn a thread about frog biology into a thread about the holocaust.

"Free speech" is a meaningless concept. I get banned here all the fucking time every fucking week. My last ban lasted for two weeks because I made a fucking loli joke on /x/. Before that it was a dumb "I hate white people" meme yakub post, banned for "racism". Some bans are deserved, like trolling, others are obviously some mods seething at me talking about cunny memes, or equating "mayo people lmao" with 50 "KILL ALL JEWS" posts that are barely moderated(and are still against the rules and still get you banned when they're reported, because Any Forums still has rules). And mods are allowed to ban people just for complaining about the mod, and they have done that regularly. In certain other sites, that could be a scandal.
People here overestimate the moderation of other sites, probably just because Any Forums's moderation is very schizophrenic. I've been around twitter and tumblr, back in the early 2010's when porn was allowed, even tumblr had neonazi blogs and shit of that adjacent. There's still people like that on twitter. Most of them just get blocked because people don't want to engage with them. Here you have to bother with 50 filters.
