Like pretty much everything in our late capitalist hellscape, it really started to go down hill once corporations realized they could aggressively monetize the internet, thus pushing out smaller, more niche communities for these homogenized online spaces where they could gather everyone and make as much money as they can.
That being said: There are still smaller communities out there, but at this point...I'm just tired and apathetic about everything, so I just mindlessly F5 the same 3 or 4 online spaces I have been for the past 10 or so years.

I miss the late 2000s/early 2010s where it was starting to get mainstream and there was a lot of cool stuff online and cool communities but it had not been taken over by normies and corporations yet. Back before everything was so political and polarized and you weren't some triggered SJW or insane Any Forumsfag. Any Forums user to be a lot better with fun, humorous and creative discussions and communities. Now everyone here is so negative and hateful. We used to give each other shit here but it wasn't mean sprited like it is now. If you could take the ball busting, you were good.

But maybe it's also I'm getting old. I just don't care about modern internet culture anymore. I'm 30 and I've been on this site since like 2007 and it's just awful now. I don't care about the culture wars or most of this shit. It feels like online used to be an escape from real life and now real life is an escape from online.

I feel like not that long ago online was a lifeline and a source of so much happiness and hope. I grew up in a shitty abusive home and it was my only outlet to an outside world. I met friends there and I was able to move out with them and be happy for the first time in my life.

I remember 2012 and it was the last time I truly remember being happy. I lived with like 4 other neckbeard dudes I met online and we went to conventions and played dnd and shit. It was before "nerd culture" was soi corporate cringe and it felt like things were finally turning around. There was so much hope and optimism for the future and it felt like technology and the communication was the escape from all the idiot normies, like we had our own paralleled society.

Where did it all go so wrong, bros?

Smart phones, man. I keep telling you. It lowered the barrier of entry to the internet, and made it so all of the shitters who can't even work or afford a computer (and the people who go outside) are also online all of the time.

Of course. I kinda envy zoomers since things were always bad for them and there was never a promise things would get better. But to be born into a world of plenty and promise to see it all slip away and have things keep getting worse is depressing.

this is absolutely it. just like with movies and video games, once you could make insane money off of it, everyone immediately starting following the successful "blueprint", rather than have do their own thing.

Discord probably put the last nail in the coffin for originality and community, as everyone and everything had to have their own Discord servers. good program for voice chat and sending offensive memes to your buddies, horrible social platform (and I really don't understand why so many use it as a forum).

Internet always sucked. Is just that we were young and naive and we were wasting our time distracted by the damn internet and consoles.

And I definitely got old too.
