Im leaving boys,
moving totally off grid. Give me your words of advise for the cold and wet winter ahead.
Going OFF-Grid
whats your shelter?
stock up on firewood
The caravan in pic related. Plus an annex.
No firewood right now, but do have a diesel heater.
thats you in the pic?
you look like a normie
why are you moving into the woods?
Yes.
Why? bc im not morbidly obese?
Because I got a $300 quarterly water bill a few weeks back.... paying that much money for a resource which literally falls from the fucking sky.
Over the last few hundred years we have built a sickening and soul draining system. We work longer and harder than we every have in history for less and less each year. And we spend the money we do make to pay out subscription to staying in the same system, and whats left on bullshit to fill the voids in out heart.
Life can be a lot cheaper and a lot less taxing ion the spirit. The lost? Maybe a bit of cold and occasional loneliness. A fair price I think.
you look like a average guy
whats the food situation looking like? going to be hunting?
Thats the point.
Dumpster diving + cheap shit from Aldi.
Plus rabbit hunting when the weather allows for outdoors cooking.
Learn to appreciate the small things. Learn how to spread things and reuse them. Appreciate that you may not be eating too regularly in a day. And stocking up isnt too bad of an idea except when you need to travel light
dont forget to put out your fire at night
no large game around?
well im jelly, get to have a campfire every night
Keeping warm during winter will be pretty hard but if you are prepared I think youll be ok.
Its easy enough to layer up, especially of a night, but the real hard part is going to be keeping dry whilst also staying warm. If you can get hold of it, try and use a tarpaulin cover that can go over your trailer and use it like some sort of extra shelter. It just means that youve got some more protection from the elements to sleep too
>use a tarpaulin cover that can go over your trailer
>but the real hard part is going to be keeping dry
what?
wouldnt that trap all the moisture in?
This. You dont want to cause any accidental fires around where you sleep nor draw any attention to yourself either
Imagine it kind of like an extra cover that goes over your trailer. The tarpaulin has to have no holes in it so that it doesnt leak either. Think of it as extra protection against the elements. You could also use said tarpaulin to collect water with.
is it covering or hanging over?
Something to keep in mind is looking after your own health too. Stay dry as best as you can. Try and think about conserving energy too. Do you really need to be awake when its dark? Getting up with the light of day will be for the best. Get your rest when you need it too
That's cool, OP. I hope to do the same before too long. But I also want to work remotely so I can buy land eventually.
Regarding cold weather, any interest in insulating that trailer some more? If you're on your own land you can consider building an underground home too, check out Mike Oehler's designs. The most expensive parts of any house are the foundation and the insulation, if you build into the earth itself then you've got both of those covered by default.
Covering. It sounds kind of dumb but it solved a problem I had with a creaky shed I stayed in. The roof was leaking but it was also drafty and damp to stay in. I put up a tarpaulin cover tightly (Ive learned not to allow it to hang due to winds) and it solved a problem for me until I fixed the roof. Ive used it whenever I could and to protect stuff that I need from rain. Its not warm but it protects enough from wind and rain. Its something I keep handy in my car. I usually cover my car with it too when Im in the woods and staying out when cold
Not near me. Might expand to other areas once im settled.
I got a 5kw diesel heater for the caravan. Ill be running it off a mix of diesel and recycled deep-fry oil to keep costs down. And I have it powered from an additional car battery in my landcruiser.
Thats cool user, but I would only think of using that heater for when its really cold and the extra blankets and insulation just arent enough to keep you warm. Youve got that at least to fall back on
anyways op since this is winter remember to have some kind of ventilation or a dehumidifier to get rid of the moisture
have it run throughout the night cause stick your hand in front of your mouth right now and breathe into it
being damp in the winter is a bad idea
Hmm, from what research I did it looks like they are pretty cheap to run. About 5l of diesel per week. Since the heater and electrical system to get it going cost about 300 I feel like I need to use it a lot this winter to justify the purchase.
To be honest I actually mainly got it for my girlfriend so she keeps coming round haha. And will help my normal firends happy too. Plus will make it easier to study.
Oh fuck yeh. I did think about that. Any good options for this that dont use a lot of power?
if you can find out the night and morning's weather, if its not too cold you can crack a window
but otherwise its a dehumidifier in a closed space or a fan venting out
