I think the reason it that freedom causes people to devolve into tribalistic retarded apes that they are deep down. It doesn't help that postmodernism dictates that there are no truths. The American culture is just an extension of this natural state caused by a lack of reasonable sociocultural control mechanisms.
As to how it came to be, it's probably mainly dictated by historical contingency, namely the continuum from the Greek individualism to French revolution to Nazis and finally to Soviets which caused Americans to scorn everything not a freedom cult.
There could be a genetic component as well, at least in deeply collectivist cultures such as in China individualists have probably been largely bred out. Individualism as a cultural component (or as lack of collectivism) is of course not a synonym for independent thought. Rather, it means that the individual will seek to increase their status in their ingroup but not distinguish themselves too much to be cast out of it. Collectivists do the same but they do it through service rather than through distinguishing themselves.

I mean, the irony of it notwithstanding, this. Stupid people tend to think in black and white, extremes. Smart people understand that basically everything comes in shades, there's always room for argument, interpretation, risk vs. reward that makes few things a simple yes or no choice. But, as one would expect, it's not this simple. It's not just a matter of Americans being stupid. It goes beyond that.
They are the deliberate victims of foreign and domestic propaganda, brainwashing, lack of education, and misinformation. It's not that a larger percentage of American people would be somehow genetically dumber than those of any other western nation. It's that in the other countries, education and a lack of similar political corruption or foreign interest has enabled a critical portion of the populace to remain at least somewhat critical and aware.

Just something else to blame on the internet. Back in the 90s, it was advertised as a place where you could easily meet people with similar interests. And it was. Now everyone isolates with-in those communities of 'similar' people and aren't exposed as much to how other people feel about them or their beliefs.
There has never been a more polarizing event in human history. The entire world is segregated even though they're physically surrounded by people of different cultures and viewpoints. It's completely broken society.

Smart people know that's not what the word nuance even means.
EVERYTHING ultimately resolves to blacks and whites. Anything you think is grey is an illusion; you simply haven't analyzed the individual components at a granular enough level. Continue your analysis, and you will reach the blacks and whites eventually. (That also happens to be what "nuance" actually means, BTW.)
