Nobody will ever be able to give you a coherent answer to why "an average of 1 million total viewers over the course of the entire show" matters, because it doesn't and they know it doesn't. That's the game. When you say "It doesn't matter", in their minds, they've won.

But in a general sense, total viewership is important because someone is never too old to buy a ticket or a t-shirt or a PPV. You want to generally increase your reach because that's more customers that will spend money on your product, but AEW's viewership is pretty stable and that's fine. They're selling tickets, they're selling PPVs, they're doing fine in that regard. Honestly what's way more concerning is that their demo is down a lot from this time last year, even if it's #1 every week. It's not a big deal right now, but they're gonna have to do better than .32s and .33s every week when it comes time to negotiate.
