Large age gaps were much more accepted and tolerated, but the average age for marriage in ancient and medieval societies was 18-21. You had the freedom to go much lower if you wanted, but most people didn't take advantage of that choice, instead opting for people around their same age.

Did you know that menarche (i.e. when girls start to be able to have kids) depends on weight and bodyfat %?
Chubby girls get their period early, starving girls late and only infrequently.
Nature literally tells you to have kids as soon as possible if your society is well fed and not to have kids if you can't even feed yourself.

Nature is minmaxed to encourage a society to grow to the maximum population it is able to feed.
Modern humans don't need that anymore. We're in a different situation from the humans that lived tens of thousands of years ago, so we need to make our own rules that fit our situation.

Those rules include allowing girls to grow up without having to worry about raising children.

There kind of is, in the sense that most people would regret doing that kind of thing when they're older, and that publicizing yourself in such a way can be dangerous and lead to bad consequences. With that said, I do think that some "anti-pedophilia" laws are over-the-top - I know an adult who was sentenced to 66 years in prison for having consensual sex with a 13 year old. The judge needs to have his ass beat, that's inexcusably severe for statutory rape.

16-18 year olds might serve as extra competition, but I don't think anyone who believes a fucking 12 year old would serve as "competition" is really in touch with reality

A lot of guys would gladly go for the 16-19 side of things were it legal and socially acceptable, maybe 15 as well, but the 12-14 range is simply not tempting and not attractive for the average man

(Well 18-19 is legal in all states, and 16-17 is legal in most states, it's the "socially acceptable" part that's a barrier for most guys)
