Russia has been attempting to increase their GDP and overall quality of life for their citizens whilst also attempting to keep the deteriorating stability in Asia and Eastern Europe. Russia cares about poorer countries, and thus has been lowering their gas and fuel prices since the mid 2000s, as a wa to keep their economies stable. However, as NATO keeps on progressively expanding, threatening Russias security and stability, Russia has to defend itself. Which the only way to do that is to gain back puppet Russian states.

There's no such thing as Ukraine or Ukrainian people historically. Likewise the country has been divided and in a constant internal conflict ever since the USSR fell.
As things are right now, I don't see why it should exist.
