If you don't have much money, buying a car on a whim is one of the worst things you could possibly do. You should avoid buying a car unless it's necessary (i.e. to get to work or if you live far from necessities and can't use public transportation).

so you can look good when ur stuck in traffic? nice cars are cool but where are you going to take it to really drive it? the fucking highway in a nice straight line? i dont get it. maybe you can start a business or buy a house and if your not into that american dream stuff you can be charitable and help out an user

Just get a toyota carolla. I love mine. It is so common so there are always spare parts for it in the shop.

Do you need the car? If you've got that kind of cash, I'd work on developing your assets. Buy things that make money, not cost money. Buy and run a few vending machines as a start. They have very high profit values and can be installed illegally without much repercussion.

I have a Toyota Avalon, more upmarket but the same principles apply. Cheap to run, balls reliable, comfy.

I spent so much fucking time and money acquiring and repairing special snowflake cars. I was always poor and living in fear over whether or not my car would decide to fuck me and leave me stranded at the side of the road. I actually inherited the Avalon from my grandpa and I was planning to sell it, but then my 335i suffered a series of cascading failures (high pressure fuel pump, catalytics converters ruined by oil leak, turbos) and I had no choice but to scrap it. I had no money for another car so I just drove the Avalon. Over time I really warmed up to it. The feeling of knowing that your car is paid for, knowing that it will start 9,999 times out of 10,000, knowing that if something does break it will be relatively inexpensive to fix... it's such a good feeling, bros. It's like dating a loyal, chubby librarian who will always back you up vs the clubbing whore who will cheat on you first chance she gets.

Fuck yeah, I am glad you understand my feelz. I love my toyota carolla. It just works, every time. Also, if i commit a crime, it is so common that people have a harder time figuring it out it was me.
And people of a certain ethnicity (I mean Finnish people, of course) are less likely to break into it, given it is a poor people car, and poor people don't have nice things to steal from (I am actually quite loaded in reality, haha)

Get a cool car but get a cool and unique car. Get a car way under budget and modify it. You'll have a lot more fun and you'll get a community to talk with while you learn things

If you need a car and WANT to have something going for you, get something cheap: under 5k. Invest the rest into index funds (maybe a few mutual funds & ETFs). Don't cash out until you retire or absolutely need the cash for an emergency.

Should I buy a Volvo S60? What do you guys think of the car. It will be my first btw.

what year? my buddy has an 06 s60. great car.

Nah don't do it.
I was in the same boat a few years ago and the car, while fun, doesn't help with anything else than my own enjoyment and I could have probably forgone it a few years for a better one.

If you're a car guy with good credit (2.5%apr at most) and can cash flow the monthly payments, then you could probably get a loan and be fine while enjoying the car.

But if you're doing it in place of a personality or to impress women, it won't work

If you want to survive a while, buy a rifle, a handgun, ammo, and proper body armor.
Invest in some silver, shitcoin, and stonks, but only put in as much as you're willing to lose.
Invest some money in certificates too, if the banks fail, it's a loss, if not, it's a safe investment.
If you don't own a home, consider van life.
Modern cars are garbage, cars in general are just money pits and it will depreciate in value for a while before it becomes valuable, if it becomes valuable. If you want a cool car, get something older for under $20k. Honestly though, I enjoy driving in VR more than I do IRL. Much cheaper.

Found the simracer. You compete at all online?

Though there's nothing that can replace a real track day.

It's probably a bad financial decision but personally I spent a bit under half of my savings from covid payments and remaining work income on a car that I enjoy driving and I do not regret it one bit because it let me explore my hobby by having something to work on and a fun car to drive. If you're just buying it as a tool there's no need to spend so much but if you're passionate about these things and you know it won't put you under financialy, then go for it, but make sure you're 100% sure that you won't end up regretting it later.

>You compete at all online?
Nah. I actually haven't tried simracing online, I assume it's a crashy lag fest like every non-sim racing game (and all the webms I saw on /o/), so I've only bothered to do so against AI. I only do comfy doritoing and cruises online. Might give it a shot but my friends don't have much interest in racing. Can't say anything about that last bit. Unfortunately, where I live, the nearest road course is over 2000 miles away across an ocean. Most I've ever done is autocross and rallycross, and sure it's fun, but not worth the money or time.

>I have $50k, should I just get a cool car?
No dummy, you should buy a house. I bought a run-down Edwardian mansion in a small town for $55,000 and I could sell it for at least twice that now. If I wanted a cool car the bank would be happy to loan me the money for one since I own a house. But instead I drive a Pontiac Sunfire that is over twenty years old and cost less than a new bicycle.

Cool care the worst possible financial decision you can take. But if it makes you happy and lifts you out of depression, it may be worth the opportunity cost.

Otherwise I would recommend putting it all in low cost index funds and waiting 30 years.

Don't buy a cool car. Buy something beat up, fix it up for cheap but with love, and by the end of it you'll have resourcefulness, patience and a manly hobby going for you.
Also buy a cheapo Accord or something as a daily because you never daily a project car.
