on my rugby team we would lay on a bench with our head hanging off and hold a plate to our forehead and use ur neck to move it up and down

yes but forward and backwards is all you need, all three of those work the same muscles. The only muscles that make your neck look thicker are on the sides of your neck. You can get one of those things that wraps around your head and is attached to a rope with weights that fighters use, and you can do various neck bridges. If you just want a stronger thicker neck though and aren't a specialist athlete, you only need the curls.

Start with just your body weight, ~10-25 rep range. You don't need to go heavy on neck curls lol

Doing full range of motion neck curls on a bench will make your neck burn even without weights after like 15 reps

and considering higher reps are better for muscle growth, people shouldn't start off with weights.

i think nobody likes doing neck exercises at the gym because they know it looks kind of retarded, plus i kind of like this thing which is like the boxers use where you put plates at the front or sides i think and they you just move your head up and down, so id rather do this at home
