If you successfully obliterate the opposing side after it wrongs you then you have removed the threat of it happening again, regardless of what petty shit sets it off. That's why it's instinctual to want to fight someone after they disrespect you. Your primal brain knows that it's an attack on your resource provision and mating and you get ready to fight.

Not all revenge has to delete people. If you have to delete people in order for your revenge to work then it wasn't the revenge that removed the threat it was just deleting them.

Evolution does not optimize for happiness. We need to ignore our primal urges and think about what optimizes happiness instead, and that is not revenge.

Not all retaliation over being wronged is to the same degree, but the underlining instinct that causes retaliation of any degree in the first place is one that seeks to eliminate the other after the other wrongs you.
