They're definitely back in style. It largely depends on your face and haircut though (and of course whether you can grow a good mustache or not).
I've got a friend who usually rocks a mustache and he looks weird without it. Fits him very well. But when I've grown out my mustache it just didn't look right so I haven't let it grow out again since then.
Basically, grow it out and see how it looks on you.
