Ye well evolution doesn't really care about the species. It works on the level of the individual except in some cases like group selection.
Sexual selection also doesn't really select for fitness or whatever, it just selects for what's successful reproductively, which can be good or bad traits. There are enough examples of species driven to extinction by sexual selection due to stupid traits being selected for.
