A lot of people who lift used to be skellies. We literally eat so much until we get sick of eating so we're not depriving ourselves of anything really.
But how much strength did you gain?
I started exercising more recently, it's very much easier than when I was almost class 2 obese. I guess it will just take me longer

If by comfort foods you mean eating massive amounts of sugary or fatty shit, I don't find that comfortable at all, quite the opposite infact.
Today is weekend tho, so I cooked authentic bolognese for 6 hours with a cheeky sprig of rosemary (Any Forumsalians please forgive my transgressions, I like the taste) and now I'm enjoying some of the wine left-over from the cooking.
All of this still fits within my calorie-quota, and my abs are 1 or 2% bodyfat away from absolutely popping for the summer.
Different tastes for different folks, but I'd argue I still eat better than any fatty shoving comfort-food down their throath, EVEN when cutting.

It feels really really good to be healthy. When you are sedentary and eat comfort foods, your mind and body arent getting optimum fuel for a comfortable existence. When i was fat, and i also see this in ppl i know, i constantly was tired. I had more than a few days per month where my mind was just completely foggy, and many days where i just didnt feel like i had the drive to do much but veg out on the couch. I got fit by lifting, running and changing my diet to mostly whole foods, and treating comfort foods as little treats when out with friends and shit like that.
By doing this, i now feel amazing. I wake up with purpose and energy. I dont even remember the last time i had a foggy day outside of when i got food poisoning. I am stronger than most people i meet, and i can use my body as a tool to get shit done in the house way easier. Many people dont realize how bad they feel, bc theyve never felt what its like to feel great
You won't feel like a god, but life is alot more enjoyable when you dont feel like shit
