Can we talk about physical therapists? What has your experience been with them, how much do they cost, are they worth it, what should I expect if I went to one?
I have a particular problem where Im not sure I can do benching because my ribcage is askew, which has caused shoulder issues on one side and I was thinking about seeing a physical therapist to either help me or tell me what i can do to help me grow my chest, because I have an uncommon problem.
I had a problem with my foot, got an ultrasound, referred for physio. I also made some dietary changes at the same time, but the guy has done a bunch of manual work and other stuff involving sonic shockwaves.
Seems legit, hasn't hurt me, in any case, tho if it isnt covered by insurance, who knows. Like many things, it depends on having a good physio vs. a bad one. It's not as standard as medicine, there is wide variability.
Generally you want to go to them with some sort of documentation of a legit medical problem, e.g. xrays or ultrasounds and the report, and then they can figure out what to do.

physical therapists won't tell you anything you can't figure out yourself through google, just go osteopath, they'll do a physical therapist's job and on top of that manipulate/massage as needed
Nathan Collins
yes definitely go. and if you need more than pt its usually required by insurance to get an mri

Ian Reyes
Yeah, I did after surgery but when you break shit real bad is about the only time you need them.

I just know that my shoulder feels fucked up and I cant seem to bench right without causing shoulder problems, even with good form. I suspect its because of my scoliosis and ribcage. In my mind Im thinking Ill go to physical therapist and they can check me out and tell me "yea heres where its causing problems and heres how you will have to do it" or something along those lines. Youre saying Id have to maybe see a regular doctor first and have them check out my shoulder and spine?
Zachary Price
I mean, I kind of know what might be going on from Athlean X video about my shoulder being in a bad position but I cant seem to fix the problem and I think its because one of my arms is pulled back further than the other due to my ribcage being askew. I know how to do the bench but my body cant seem to physically conform to it. Ill look into osteopath but like I said I dont have the money to spend on expensive doctors.

Im not fucked up yet but If I keep trying to lift wrong Im going to keep fucking up my shoulder. I want to do bench but I havent been able to do it right. Who do I see to help me with that, knowing that I dont have a straight back. I want someoen to analyze how my arms are moving to tell me how I can do it or if I wont be able to do it at all.

I went to a physical therapist after a spasm while squatting with bad form. It wasn't worth it. Despite them acting like they served athletes, 90% of their clients were old people. It wasn't very helpful. If you go to one I recommend finding a therapist that specializes in athletes and not old/fat people.
Yea thats what I was wondering about too. Ive read people say theyve gone to PT for help with shit like a deadlift injury but then the PT also seem to do a lot of other stuff not focused on weight lifting. Who helps people with scoliosis and shit do weight lifting, thats what I want to know.

Do you have any xrays, etc. showing what you mean by your problem? I mean, is it obvious from looking at you that something is wrong, or is it just "what you feel?"
Eli Mitchell
No, I know something is bent up becaue I can see it with my clothes off. I can see one side of the bottom of my ribcage sticks out more than the other and its not even at all when I suck in my stomach to make it more apparent. If someone just looked at my carefully they could tell. But you are right, I have not had an x-ray ever and that would help to take to someone so I can get help.

The exercises I got when I went to PT were basically stuff meant for someone who was seriously disabled or crippled, like someone confined to a wheelchair. You should try a PT practice associated with a university medical center because they might have a younger clientele.
Also agree with that you should go to a primary care physician first.
Colton Morales
I always start with an orthopedist or sports medicine doc to prescribe the PT. Then I find a local PT place covered by health insurance and I give it a go.
Sometimes the therapist seems skilled and focused, sometimes disinterested. If they don't seem to care I switch to a different therapist or a different clinic.
PT has helped me walk better after major surgery, helped my joint pain and range of motion issues. Without health insurance though I would never have been able to afford it.
David Long
Damn I only have basic state insurance. Im getting really bummed out because I cant fucking bench and grow my chest. Every other exercise I can do ok, squat, deadlift, rows, shoulders. Its just benching thats been giving me problems.
Angel Gray
I had deep hip/ass inflammation that lasted a few years, it got so bad sometimes I could barely walk and I had a sharp pain whenever I stood up. Eventually I went to the physical therapist and he got rid of 50% of the pain in one session via dry needling and soft tissue mobilization. After two months of seeing him I was completely cured.
John Green
Thats awesome. I just need to find the right person. I know there has got to be someone specializing in this shit that can know how to help me.
Blake Brooks
Yeah it actually wasn't my first PT. I went to physical therapist and he just made me do ass strengthening exercises, single leg deadlift, band stuff, etc. And it didn't help at all, so I went to an orthopedic specialist who had me do an MRI and said there was nothing wrong with me structurally, so he sent me to another physical therapist who did the soft tissue mobilization with a little bit of dry needling and ass workouts mixed in and that cured me.
Some times it takes a lot of effort to find the right guy.
