Any Forums's thoughts on Mike Mentzer and HIT?

I've been using volume workouts the two years that I've been lifting, but I've only seen beginner's gains. Quite recently I've started to look into Mike Mentzer and his promotion of HIT. What are Any Forums's thoughts on it and does anyone use on here use it in their training?

Seems to be the case that 10-20 sets per body part per week is around the ideal. Not 1-2 sets per muscle. But stronger more developed people can get more out of each set than those with less development too IMO.

Biceps are finally gaining size on his almost exact routine after a year long sticking point following NH programming. No tendonitis either. His theories on everything but maybe the bar speed are 100% correct and backed up in literature by the way. Bodybuilding is not cardio, it's literally the opposite, stop spending 3 hours in the gym.

Sauce on this routine? Dunno anything about Mike but wonder what sort of overlap his theories have with SS. I'm assuming HIT is high intensity training?

The former is a brief pamphlet, and the latter is his "final" written work. You can also find some videos on YouTube of him training someone in the nineties, along with a seminar or two, and you'll get a lot of gaps filled in with that.
I just want to note a couple of things that I struggled to clear up at first:
>rep tempo is four seconds eccentric, four seconds concentric, two second pause in the flexed position; do not pause in the stretch
>frequency and split are basically just what you can recover from (e.g. if you can handle a three day split and training three days per week like in Heavy Duty, go ahead until it stops working, then reduce frequency)

I've been on it for a couple of months now, and I'm really liking it. It's impressive how quick the sessions are and how little weight I need to feel beat up.

Curious if anyone has tried that once a week A/B split he talked about in that seminar.

Lots of people that knew Mentzer said he didn't consistently train the way he advocated. They also said he was a meth addict that fucked men but that's another story.

well I like doing the heavy top set then back off set thingy which is Mentzer-ish I think. Its a lot of fun and I see good gains and feel sick P A M P S which I really enjoy. I can share my exact routine if anons are interested

I do the Heavy Duty 2 chest+back, legs, shoulders+arms split, which is from those Mentzer workout videos that are up on youtube. You could also set it up like a PPL. I don't do the 7 days between training days though; I just rest 1-2 days normally depending on how I feel. It comes down to basically how heavy you're lifting since your strength increases but your body's ability to recover remains the same. I've been lifting for a few years so I'm not going to have dramatic gains on any program but to me if I maintain or build while doing 1 set training, 2-3 times a week then that's the optimal program. Why go more if I get the gains doing this?

I'm probably not doing the 4 second lowering and raising but as long as the bar speed is slow and controlled it's fine. I used to have tons of issues with my right knee, left pec (right where it will tear if I fuck up) and double elbow tendonitis, all are no longer an issue and I don't even use my protective equipment anymore. I attribute that to controlling the weight rather than trying to rush PRs and lift as hard as possible.

The best thing to listen to is this tape series, at least the first 2 parts. Mentzer's approach to bodybuilding is to take a rationalist, philosophical approach to it so he explains the approach through a series of arguments. I appreciated being talked to like an adult instead of fake macho bullshit like 5/3/1.

I looked around to see if modern people get results from HIT or if it was just some fad and there's people doing it, natties even. They're just not popular enough to cause a second wave. John Heart competed and won natty bodybuilding shows following HIT. That technically makes him more qualified since all the popular natty bodybuilding channels I know of, don't compete or gave up on it like Nippard.

So here is what I do: prolly a load of bullshit but I really enjoy it. 4 days: push pull legs and upper (arms focused). the key for any exercise is to do a top set with a weight you can only get 4 to 8 clean reps with. this shit should be a fucking struggle. after that you do a back off set with around 90% of the top sets weight going for 10 to 15 reps. both these sets are done to real and honest failure. you gotta go fucking hard and need a good feel for your muscle and failure in particular. I see fucks at the gym all of the time who easily have 3 more reps in the tank and but say they were close to failure. the top set and the back off set are all you do for the exercises of your choice. Ill denote that by (2, ts, bos).

push:
incline DB bench (2, ts, bos)
chest press machine (2, ts, bos)
seated DB press (2, ts, bos)
bodyweight dips(3*f)
DB lateral raises (3*racksurfing,10-20, idk I just enjoy it so much lol)
Triceps whatevers, just go burn that shit, I do french press (3*15) and rope push downs (3*20-30)

pull:
Lat PD but less lat focused (2, ts, bos)
DB row (2,ts, bos)
rear delt machine (2, ts, bos, I do it here to chill abit before more rowing)
cable rows with narrow grip (2, ts, bos)
shrugs (3*20, just fucking burn them out)
biceps whatevers, I do cable curls and incline DB curls, just fuck them up.
sometimes Ill deadlift before that or deadlift instead of one of the exercises, just start with deads if you wanna do deads.

legs:
Squats (2, ts, bos, youll need a lot of rest between those)
leg press (4*10 or something and then drop sets, feel free to just squat more here)
walking lunges
leg extension machine(100 reps as quick as possible with whatever weight you can get 30 clean ones with before the pain makes you cry)
leg curl machine (same as above)
fuck calves lol

incline DB bench (2, ts, bos)
DB row (2, ts, bos)
seated DB press (2, ts, bos)
whatever else you wanna do for your back
and then
ARM DAY yay
and maybe racksurfing DB lateral raises again

idk just have fun, go for failure lol and take a lot of creatine

HIIT is only optimal for ppl on steroids bc their bodies stay primed for muscle synthesis longer. Natties won't benefit from anything more than 72 hours rest.

I've seen that posted a lot but so far all I've seen say that was Franco Columbu in some youtube interview while he was close to death and all he said was that Mentzer was in the gym for a long time. None of the guys that actually trained with him or knew him claimed he was a liar. Casey Viator, Frank Zane, Joe Weider, Larry Pollock, Dorian Yates, aka the people actually around him never said he was a liar.
