Chris underperformed as champion but booking this in a shithole dead crowd town like San Diego was criminal
The moment he jumped ship to WWF ratings started to nosedive.
one of the dumbest booking decisions ever made. he had no business being the first undisputed champ. should've been rock or austin leading into HHH at Mania. they fucked up and gave it to Y2Gay
Change "HHH" to Scott Steiner or Buff Bagwell and I'd agree with you
the pop when he "won" it the first time from HHH was based

The thing is that this was legitimately a swerve that almost nobody saw coming. To make things even more surreal, Jericho wasn't a full blown heel yet so some people did want to see him win even if they thought there was no chance of it happening. I remember watching this live and despite him being my all time favorite wrestler I had no idea what to think of the result. He had just beat the two biggest stars of the era dirty and unified the championship with that of the rival fed but even then I didn't see anywhere it really could have gone. Hindsight of course lets us know that he was just a pawn in the McMahon's game, but there was really nothing to describe the feeling at that time because it was unlike anything else that'd happened in the AE at least. I can cut the crowd some slack, even the biggest fans of Jericho likely didn't know if this was a good thing long term or not, and everyone else was still in shock at what they just saw.
lmao they put two belts on him and they still couldnt get him over as a main event talent so they had to team him with Steph
Y2J posts here? Nice
>neither win was clean
MEGA DONG DIDLEY DIMES
huh wat u mean
Jericho was my favourite at the time and I remember feeling similar to how you describe. Pretty sure I stopped watching shortly afterwards for 10+ years, which is a weird thing to do when your favourite becomes a giga champion.
>beats two of the biggest stars in history in the same night
>still doesn't get over as a top guy
>proceed to be in one of the most forgettable main events in mania history
Would be completely laughable if it wasn’t redeemed the next year with his all time classic with HBK
Both wins were due to interference and neither was doing it for him, they were doing it because of their grudge with his opponent. He ends up as a lucky schmuck who accidently falls into the belts because other people had more important things going on. Made him look like shit and made the belts look like shit too, so HHH's eventual coronation also got hurt. Interesting booking decision to say the least.
>all time classic with HBK
It was a good match. That's about it.
This decision also came into play once HHH hurt his knee really badly.
Triple H did his best for him not to feel like a champion
walking his dog and shit until he got his titles
>Doesn't do it cleanly
