This. Every time I see someone talking about this game they are always talking about the store shit. Nobody cares. I played it and thought it was awful, as someone who loved 1.

They wanted to do something new while still riding on the coattails of their past success, and fucked up both.

Personally I think the autistic screeching over the removal of most RNG is a bonus.

I think them getting popular the first time was just a lucky fluke. They really didnt know what they were doing with the sequel.

It simultaneously makes repeat playthroughs a slog while also making them "in theory" better than the first game's concept of replayability, which was randomly generating dungeons with experience and event gates. Problem was they did away with too many of the aspects of the game that was objectively good.

Having no hamlet sucks, having singular deaths spell the end of an entire run is bullshit. In the first game you were encouraged to keep going at all cost. 3 deaths and 1 survivor was considered good especially if you made it to the Darkest Dungeon itself, but in this game if you lose someone before the event boss you might as well fucking start over.

A lot of the bosses are stupid and badly balanced. The first game might have gone a bit too ham with numberlist (especially with infinitely stacking buffs/debuffs) but this game has such an autistic fixation on avoiding broken shit that everything feels samey and boring. On the off chance that you ever find a strategy that's fun chances are it's a glitch or an exploit and they'll fix it, like the infinite stress dump abilities that they gave capstones to.

Darkest Dungeon 1 may have been a fluke, because this game seems to be getting everything wrong. And while it's not awful, it's somehow something even worse; it's forgettable. It's boring. Nobody is talking about it, because it isn't interesting.

I'm not gonna lie darkest dungeon 1 was a good concept that was ultimately trash due to the grindy nature of it that they insisted on injecting into the game
(permanent debuff forcing you to beat the final boss with multiple different parties, the fucking vampire court and dlc adding even MORE sidelined tedium and grinding)

Lack of enemy compositions meant fights in each zone got really repetitive really quick.
It's a shame the game had a good idea but ultimately I think it deserves no more than 6/10 due to the game turning into a chore more than a game by the time you hit the midgame

What did they add to 2 that made it fun?

The wanted you to care for the disposable characters and story not understanding that what made people grow attached to certain characters was the successes of some and failures of others if you got a few characters that survived awhile you grew attached to them and were less likey to throw them in the meat grinder now all characters are functionally the ones you through in the meat grinder just with story beats attached to them doesnt help the relationship system is complete aids and is a crapfest of rng worse then anything in the original

I'll just wait until they release it fully and go out of EA. I got into DD well after the game came out properly but I heard it was pretty different at first, so I'm willing to believe they'll increment stuff that works over time.

They advertised what should have been a spin off as a sequel

They wanted to do something completely different but also ride on the first game's popularity and unsurprisingly ended up just pissing off the original fans. If they had made it a new franchise I imagine a lot of DD fans would like to try it out anyway simply out of sympathy and trust to the dev and they would probably also look at it much more favourably. But by naming it DD2 they've set expectations that they were never planning to fulfil

But also, this whole thing just really reeks of bad management to me. I mean, DD1 was fairly successful, wasn't it? And regardless of that they still needed 3 years of work (in an almost complete radio silence, worth to add) and tencent's money to pump out something that's in early access and far from being finished? I'm willing to bet that either some drama happened in there or they just really fucking suck with managing time and money

caring for characters was unique and fun, but somehow still did feel like ds1. Which is good.
