Kingdom Hearts 1 is my favorite by far. I liked the way magic worked a lot more, with you having to build up your magic by landing physical attacks. Party member AI also seemed a lot better and blocking attacks with guard seemed way more important. Plus I liked the platforming and puzzle solving that later games don't have. Really the only addition I like in KH II is reaction commands.
good ARPGs are hard to make, and Dark Souls changed what people consider to fit that mold, so most devs no longer try.
Dark Souls is awful though.

>positioning and spacing is irrelevant thanks to Air Step, with ground and air being the same exact shit (never mind the general mechanics of KH3 being terrible)
>too restrictive in how you can approach them (constant random hyper-armor, and dumb downed Revenge Value system for babbies so combo optimization and picking which offensive tools to use no longer matters )
>DMs last way too long and kill the pacing of fights (taking control of the flow of the fight away from the player when the whole point of KH2 is freedom)
>bosses AI with little to no variation (bosses in 3 literally are hard coded to run down a fucking unbreakable list of attacks in rotation instead of randomly picking from a pool of attacks each phase like KH1/2 and other action games to keep the action reactive/interesting
>revenge counters were gutted, turning a unique and interesting system into the boring auto-counters of regular action games
