they almost always have a promotion for new/returning members for 1month for $1. sometimes its 3 months for $1
you let that run out and sometimes they will add another month for free to try to get you to sub longer.

Did you apply the gold after gamepass ultimate? As far as I know you do the Gamepass Ultimate AFTER you use gold codes.

>apply 1 month gamepass ultimate, can be the $1 or even full price, price doesn't matter
>gamepass sees you have gold and converts it all to gamepass ultimate
>3 years of gold can become 3 years of GPU through this
If you applied gamepass BUT still have the gold codes you could wait until gamepass ultimate runs out then do it.
Not sure about the other way around.

yeah idk my GPU wasn't expired when I applied 9 months of Gold codes so I don't know what's going on with my subscription anymore
