I played a bit of this as a kid. I remember being really happy when I heard it was set during the great war, but half of it took place in some shitty chinese pagoda, and the bad guy was like some oriental wizard hopping up and down and giggling in curly slippers. It was gay as fuck, so I turned it off.

Not entirely accurate. In 2 you defeat one of your compatriots from 1 when he went off the deep end. You solve the suffering and live happily with a new love. It doesn't lead to the happy end at all, it leads to a new good end.
Also, Akusa fusions where you become a demon and fight naked with an invisible ring was the hypest shit I ever experienced in a video-game and have yet to top it. Xenoblade 2 comes close with the driver and art combo announcing huge combos I seldomly get off, but SH II is better overall.

It's not entirely SH1 since he seems to have kept memories, but he will clearly make sure Alice survives
