Technically you don't need to read it at all, but knowing the basic stuff can help you pick a main and know more about the setting. Before playing AACC you could read old Tsuki, maybe KT and play the very first melty which has its own story mode. As for Nu Melty, Remake is enough, but I'm pretty sure only Ciel's route is available

The damage output for autocombos is exceptionally low, if you don't care about winning neutral more, then yeah, keep mashing 'em.

For CPUs you can just mash all day. For online, yeah it'll help to learn one. More importantly I hope you know what to do if they're blocking, most autocombo mashers sure get fucked over when that happens.
