Yes, people flanderize VIII in general and it wouldn't surprise me if part of it was because of Spoony's awful review. Squall is a teenager thrusted into the spotlight as a war general that's supposed to lead and order around a party of retards as well as his entire military school. All in all it's surprising he keeps his cool as much as he does.
The perfect example is during Edea's assassination, he tells Irvine to not overthink it and to take the shot; when that fails (he actually does technically hit, Edea stops the bullet) he springs into action with the car.

Yeah, just replayed it again after 2 decades that he's pretty different from what I commonly see people claim him to be. Probably kinda like how Cloud is a sarcastic smartass for most of FF7 except when he literally goes insane in the middle of the story, but people keep saying that he is an aloof and cool dude.

I’ve been playing them as a double pack, never played 7 before, Cloud seems like a jerk until the plate dropping, from there out he seems like a reluctant leader struggling with his own issues. Same for Squall really, neither seem they want to be in charge but just go along with it
