Imagine understanding and typing out the narrative only to miss the point that the game isn't about revenge its about forgiving. Ellie lost whatever years of life with joel because she couldn't forgive him until after he got his brains bashed in. The reason she let's abby go is because she remembered the promise to joel that despite not forgiving him she was going to make an attempt to try. Doesn't make that message any less fucking dumb but that's the message.

ellie NOT killing abbey is when the fundamental change inside ellie occurs.

if she would've killed abbey the story would've been the typical brainless video game or anime story. ellie changing after all that's happened is ellie choosing life. and it's bittersweet because she goes back for dina but we know what happens. instead of having that resolved, ellie walks off and we get the sense that ellie has grown with this, as she''ll have to learn to live with this mistake that is not resolved. and that is so much truer to real life. it's not neat and pretty nor is it easy.

I remain convinced that people who earnestly defend the game are mentally ill. I understand simply liking it - like I said before, the game definitely has objectively good qualities to it - but those who outright feel a need to defend it are actually insane and also hardcore projecting. The same people who frothingly messaged me for that one comment were simultaneously unironically going with the "people who don't like this game are le angry gamer chuds with no impulse control" meme.
