Orthographic Voxel Pixel Art

Is this the future of graphics or just a gimmick?

it looks pretty damn cool

maybe if youre poor and play on a 15 year old thinkpad

probably just a gimmick, considering how we went all in on polygons quite a while ago, but it's still cool and I like it.

why not just use 3d models and use pixel filter

Voxels look cool but don't scale well and are a bitch to animate.

your webm looks like shit with that bitrate and resolution

>metadoom
>no metaduke

I imagine it could be done by animating models and using algorithms to transform that into the voxel arrangement, but that would probably require serious investment to make it good and there's not much reason at all to do it as of right now.

It looks good for older games with low-resolution textures since it keeps consistency with the general art style while still being an upgrade.

Adding high resolution textures or polygonal models to games like Doom or Duke usually looks like crap.

Voxels have had this said about them for years

Doesn't look as good as using voxel models, but I guess it saves a ton of work

retarded frogposter

voxels are the past though? see red alert 2

Now the map is the problem. It doesn't add up to the voxel models of npcs.

what is this called?

This would work wonders on the VR mods of Doom/Duke Nukem

It's very easy to do in Houdini with just couple of nodes for example and it's not a "technological investment" on any level.
However... there is no reason to use it in games especially in this day and age where every game is a dlc infested gambler's paradise instead of a real vidya game anyway.
