Was tired and burned out from many years of FPS games.
The JRPG I'd been waiting for finally came out and I was done with it, kinda lost in a void, haven't enjoyed an FF since Ivalice.
Was considering going to WoW but I was trying to get away from Blizzard, wasn't overly enjoying myself on other FPS games since I'd play them in stints. Registered for a free trial for FFXIV last year when I was researching and didn't do anything with it.
January hit and I was burned out hard.
Spent a week or so reading about MMO's a bit, my choices were going to be guild wars 2, wow or ffxiv and again, wow was an issue so I went with XIV but I couldn't buy the game. Eventually figured out I had a free trial and got started.
Been enjoying myself chipping away over the months, at the end of 4.0, finally reached the return to ivalice raids, just finished Eureka about to go into Baldesion Arsenal then Stormblood and I've gained an appreciation for hunts and might start FFXI down the line.
I have a lot of complaints about gameplay systems, config etc but it's not the worst thing in the world.

Does anyone else think people vastly overrate how hard it is to play black mage? It has a crazy amount of instacasts and some of the best movement tools in the game. If you keep swiftcast and a triplecast charge in your pocket at all times even something completely surprising you will just make it so you have to clip a bit to hit swift or triple. Use sharpcast for fire instead of thunder if you want to really have a lot of wiggle room. Worst case scenario is that you say "fuck it" and hit transpose so you can cope out and spam umbral soul for a couple GCDs, and that's really not the end of the world.

I think when people say hard, they mean hard to play optimally. You can squeak by in most content while constantly dropping your spaghetti, but keeping peak efficiency requires a good hit more effort and skill

God party finder is somehow even worse this patch. Just had a PLD use zero cooldowns, randomly hit hallow ground when pulling in P5S and only use the royal authority with no spell attacks.
