You may be joking but I'm terrified that this will happen. Not that it will flop but that it will be successful as a fg-adjacent genre that will sap away all the players.
Riot (and Icefrog) already killed off the RTS genre.

Them's Fightin' Herds will take over the genre and get added to the olympics

Right now there's a huge untapped market for inflation fetishism. Inflation fetishism is the key to the genre. Also DOING LESS SEXIST CRAP.

They don't have to, the genre is just esports now

feelio no black nerd friendo to throw down in some mugen getting stoned late into the night

>will never be on consoles
doesn't count

wut

When is the last time that even happened? SF4 was the main FGC game for years but that's not really redefine the genre like how Battle Royales change how dev make shooting games.
This genre been pretty much the same since the first 2D and 3D game. Only thing people want is Japanese devs to get their heads out their asses and put rollback in newer games.

It doesn't really need redefining. We're in another renaissance where there are in fact too many options to choose from due to the proliferation of rollback netcode. Once crossplay becomes more commonplace (as it's about to be when GGST and KOFXV get their crossplay updates) it'll merely be a matter of choosing which game you like to play the most.

SF6 if it delivers on the netcode and world tour.
I'm hoping Tekken 8 redefines the franchise since they should have a budget now.

Street fighter dev decides to make a pvp 3d action game

*When

never

First, they need to work, then they need to have enough content to justify $60, and finally we can talk about genre defining features. Right now, most fail at one of the first two

Why?
2d fighting games are outdated and limited you can only fight other players you can't go fishing building or do other shits

That's where you're wrong kiddo
