Actually the version that is currently on Steam was somewhat fixed by modders, removed some extremely bad parts and remapped the others. The mad men are still fixing the game, it's under the beta branch.
But it's still that bad, I finished it last week.
Story segments in particular come out of nowhere, if anything you'll be confused whether you mistakenly skipped a cutscene or something.
It's good for unintentional or partly intentional laugh.
If you look at the 2016 trailer and even demo, they make a lot more sense.

The 17 year time skip between the factory and the ship is the worse and defies logic. How does Mitchell keep a ship full of kids fed for that long? How do you keep a ship like that fueled AND maintained for that long, especially with a barebones crew?
