Far as I've been able to tell the main hangup for a lot of people is that Eternal is VERY tightly designed in how it intends for you to play, it gives you a bunch of tools and expects you to use most if not all of them all the damn time. While previous games generally let you lean heavily on specific weapons or methods, with Doom 16's "Rich Get Richer" rune probably being one of the worst offenders.
Its a very divisive change in game design and I can honestly understand why a lot of people aren't crazy about it.
