Looking back on it, was it really that bad?
Looking back on it, was it really that bad?
The story, characters, and pacing were atrocious. The gameplay was not bad.
Yeah
It suffered from that weird Naughty Dog "OK, where the fuck am I supposed to go?" phenomenon, especially when you get to the cultist island, which the first one did not suffer from at all.
This entire fucking franchise is beyond overrated. Even the first games story is about on par with an average episode of The Walking Dead, at best.
Making Abby playable was a colossal misstep.
--- Abby --- was a colossal misstep.
If it was dlc or something I may have forgiven it, but forcing you to play as her in the core game was retarded.
There were no memorable characters in this game. Like, at all. The first one had that gay guy in the town with his traps and the pair of black brothers who you meet in Pittsburgh and David, just tons of memorable moments that really stick with you.
I couldn't tell you what actually happens to who in Part 2 because the whole thing is just completely forgettable.
>DUDE THESE CHARACTERS FROM THE FIRST GAME WHO ARE THERE FOR 10 MINUTES AND HAVE 20 LINES OF DIALOGUE ARE SO MUCH MORE MEMORABLE THAN THESE CHARACTERS FROM THE SECOND GAME WHO ARE THERE FOR HOURS AND HAVE 100S OF LINES OF DIALOGUE
the stupidest criticism, on par with the "sjw writing" nonsense.
Not that i agree with that user but you know that screen time doesn't mean memorability right?
A game about horrible people doing horrible things with zero redemption. But the gameplay is much better than 1.
it does when we're talking about this small of an amount. legitimately what can you say about the side characters in the first game? oh the black guys were brothers and....um...the little one liked ellie and the older one...uh...knew what an ice cream truck was?
it's such a massive grasping at straws moment to say these guys are memorable.
I knew all about the memes and plot beats going into it, but I still thoroughly enjoyed playing it besides the flashback/forced walking segments. They were abundant, but when they were out of the way, the game was exceptional. The story and characters were also a step down from the first. By about two thirds of the way through the story I started skipping the cutscenes because I simply didn't care and the writing wasn't worth suffering through any longer. But the actual combat, exploration and atmosphere captured during those moments of walking through new areas were 10/10 in execution. Considering the lows of the game contrasted with its strengths, I still maintain it's a solid 8. I'd happily play a third game. But it is staggering to me how quickly ND chose to ruin its one culturally defining lightning-in-a-bottle moment with so much shameless milking. The DLC, the recent remake, the show coming out, and 2's bad writing are overkill. As a sequel, it's not great. As a standalone game with gruesome combat, it's one of the best third person action games I've played in a long time.
This.
The Last of Us 2 did the same mistake that Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry 4, and Halo 5 did.
It tried to replace a beloved character with an unpopular replacement and deservedly got major negative backlash because of it.
There are a lot of shows/games/comics/whateveryoucanthinkof with lots and lots of memorable characters with like 10 minutes of screentime, but i will never say that any character in The Last of Us that isn't Joel, Ellie and even Abby for the wrong reasons is somewhat memorable, they're really standard and boring zombie survivor dudes, really nothing special.
>Bill
>Tess
Both had very little screentime and left an impact. The rattler boomer guy in pt. 2 had very little screentime but left a much larger impression than Ellie's cohort of friends. Basically the new characters lack personality, they each feel like sassy teen actors from a CW show.
>there are a lot of shows/games/comics/whateveryoucanthinkof with lots and lots of memorable characters with like 10 minutes of screentime
Name 10. That are actually realistic characters, not some faggot anime shit or something where the character is memorable because there's so wacky xD! You cannot make a character memorable when they're only allowed to do so little and say so little, unless you resort to making them a walking caricature.
No they're not, fuck off. Even the games forget these characters exist almost immediately. If I asked you on the spot to recall even one line spoken by any of these characters you probably wouldn't even be able to do it.
>f I asked you on the spot to recall even one line spoken by any of these characters you probably wouldn't even be able to do it.
I remember Bill calling Ellie Bobby Fischer, saying "Do I need to remind you what is out there?" shitting on his boyfriend's t-shirts, and Tess saying "Fuck this," before shooting a dude and reminding Joel not to get uppity because they're shitty people. Even amongst the people who love Pt. 2 and proclaim every criticism a "troll," it's pretty much unanimous that the original characters left a greater impression upon the audience than Abby or Ellie's friends did.
How many more years till this falls off the radar? It seems like there was a lull in the shilling and now with this remaster it's all back at full-annoyance levels. I hope the ps6 doesn't come out in a billion years, or ever. So sick of this shit. This will be even more insufferable when the TV show starts getting pushed.
it was bad in the same way Rings of Power is.
all production value, no substance
funnily enough both are about a mannish woman getting revenge.
It's had no more shilling than BoTW, Smash, RDR2, or any other major game. Whether you like it or not, Last of Us is a major IP.
yeah, all that shit is annoying as well dude but at least they're barely noticeable anymore and they grow less relevant every 3-5 months. But this shit just keeps pumping, it's awfully annoying in a way those games aren't. At least from a shilling perspective.
I disagree, I still see all of them (save smash) regularly brought up. Just ignore it and support threads that discuss the games you like. When I see a rare Last Guardian threat, I bump that shit.
Oh I do, I have like 50 threads hidden at any given time and I'm about to hide this one. We'll just have to agree to disagree. Based on the amount of work I have to do to post here I will stand by my claim.
