Sonic

I thought Sonic was supposed to be about going fast. Why is there so much waiting around in this game and "gotchas" to slow you down?

This is an issue that's mostly contained to Sonic 1 and CD. They weren't confident in selling a game where you could run through it too quickly to justify buying it at full price, so they added slower, more traditional 2d platforming levels to break things up.
Once they realized how people loved going fast and design that facilitated it, 2 and 3 mostly did away with slower gameplay segments. Mostly.

Huh, didn't expect a good response. Interesting.

Because Sonic was never good.
Claiming it is is the unintentional but simultaneously biggest psyop in video game history, instigated by the poor children, that we used to call Sega Kids, coping with not having Nintendo back then.

It's been three decades. Let it go.

that resolution looks all fucked up

I love watching a new batch of idiots get filtered by sonic.

i think you just memorize the levels when you play through the game couple of times and go faster each time

Sonic was NEVER about going fast, stop spreading this lie.

That meme only became real with all the 3D shit games and boosting.
Yes, SEGA had the commercials about blast processing and shit being faster paced, but that doesnt mean Sonic is all about going fast.

What's sonic about then

being shit

It's a platformer.

You're supposed to master the levels so you can find ways to avoid or circumvent the "gotchas". In your example, there are shortcuts to avoid having to wait on the platforms. A popular example is jumping across the platforms in Marble Zone to avoid waiting on the block in the lava.

Physics.

Efficiently gaining momentum in order to speed through the levels. Sonic is not a one and done game, it's very much an arcade game that encourages replayability in order to fully master sonic's movement and recognize the best routes to take through each level. The reason why Marble and Labyrinth are the weaker zones is not because they are difficult, but because they are much more linear and slow paced. They don't have any of the alternate routes of the other zones for the most part, and are much more straightforward in their design. The best Zones (Green Hill, Spring Yard and Starlight) are open ended and leave alot of routes for the players to take, which is where the replayability factor comes in.

>I thought Sonic was supposed to be about going fast

It is not, that retarded shit was added later. Original Sonic, like all good platformers, is about going slowly, carefully and methodically. All the later games are badly designed.

LE EBIN LE REDDITCHAN LE /VEE/ LE MEME LE IS LE THAT LE EVERYTHING LE IS LE SHIT

LE LOOK LE HOW LE EBIN LE I LE AM

*LE HOLDS LE UP LE SPORK*

LE X3

you have to calm down

Why do so many people think that the second you pick up Sonic you should have a perfect grip on the controls and nothing should surprise you?
The whole point of this franchise is to replay the levels for better scores and times

CD in particular was also designed with heavy exploration in mind so they made the levels more vertical to make it harder to find the generators. Which is still retarded since it limits your route option if you want the good ending and makes the past the only time period you really want to be in.

LE BUT I WANT TO LE JOIN LE /VEE/ KOOL KIDZ KLUB

I WANT TO BE LE EBIN LE REDDITCHAN POASTER
