I played Duke 3D (Atomic via Eduke) for tne first time recently and enjoyed it a lot overall. I think my favorite episode was the third one. The first was a cool introduction but it didn't feel like it had as many memorable levels, and the space theme of the second was cool but I felt like I kept being shoved into too many cramped hallways. The third feels like just the right amount or variety, challenge, setpieces, and unique level gimmicks.
I don't like the fourth episode at all though. A lot of the levels have fun themes like Dukeburger and the cop shop but I didn't like any of the new enemies and so many of the levels were just totally not fun to traverse, especially the boat. The Queen is the worst, and the boss sucks. The purple floor thay uses up your boots faster than anything else in the game and guaruntees you'll take a little damage before the door can open is the kind of design I hate, and fighting the boss underwater is terrible.

Dusk isn't even that amazing for modern boom shoots. Personally Ion Fury alone blows it out of the water.

Same. For me, Dusk dropped off hard after Act 1. Just jumping off from the "backwoods cultists" theme sucked (and fuck Act 3 making every other level pitch black with no flashlight).

Good level design and aesthetic. Cool powerups. Very nice secrets. Great encounter design. The weapons are a little plain, but other than that no real complaints. Escher Labs is probably my favorite level in an fps this side of Arcane Dimensions.
