Can FFXIV even be considered a MMORPG?

Yeah, I know of all that "RPGMMO" thing, but it isn't that either: If something, it feels like it tries to be both, but ends up being neither very well.

I've been playing for more than a year, and yet the game has nothing to do with the image I have of what an MMORPG is, and seeing the video "The Hardest Boss In Video Games History" just confirmed my suspicions: FFXI could've been a nightmare in terms of QoL and grind, but at least you had multiple builds, unique classes, strategies built around those which culminated with you fighting an eldritch being in another dimension.

The only time in FFXIV I got 10% of that was when I was farming Eureka and doing BA.

Final Fantasy 14 Endwalker sucks

FFXI was about discovery and exploration and camaraderie and writing your own story with your own group of friends. FFXIV is about a linear narrative of which you are the star. Every player goes through that same narrative. They are not at all the same type of game.

FFXIV is, however, massive, multiplayer and online, while you play the role of the warrior of light, so it is an MMORPG

I guess the important thing is whether that stuff you mentioned was actually fun. Like I've played both FFXI and XIV and while there are quite a few features in XI that seem better than XIV, I'd still rather play XIV on a regular basis than XI.

>FFXI was about discovery and exploration and camaraderie and writing your own story with your own group of friends

And isn't that what EVERY MMORPG should be?
In the end, my argument that XIV ends up being neither is that you can't do certain things in the story without affecting multiplayer interactions, so it limits itself as an RPG.
On the other side, the way it's narrative is presented limits what they can do as an MMO without affecting the story.

I shouldn't have to rely on Discord in order to have player interaction.

>And isn't that what EVERY MMORPG should be?
Not if that's not what the players want.

I fail to see how players wouldn't want that.

>I fail to see how players wouldn't want that.
I don't know. Why is FFXIV so popular, if it lacks the things you say?

>Why is FFXIV so popular, if it lacks the things you say?
Because the competition in the MMORPG genre is like 4-5 games, and half of them suck.

Sadly MMOs have let themselves get bastardized in pursuit of profits. Every MMO now either follows the WoW format, or tries to do it's own thing only to shut down for not being profitable enough.

Have you considered that the reason that there are so few modern MMOs nowadays is because players now don't really want the same things as you?

Ludicrous.
Nowadays even fiction media about people playing MMO's/living in worlds with MMO rules make success, so why wouldn't the games?

Is it because player don't want it, or is it because they're not being offered it?

I played FFXI when it first came out in the west. What it was actually about was you literally couldn;t go ANYWHERE outside of town by yourself without getting one-shotted by mobs only a couple levels above you. It was also about waiting for hours to get a complete, perfectlybalanced party together to even begin to survive any area from Qufim onward. It was a fucking shitpile, and I'm glad WoW arrived only a year later.

What is this stupid ass "RPG-MMO" that retarded WoWtards have come up with? Are these fucking stupid baboons incapable of accepting an MMO with a story? FF11 has been around for longer than 14 and that game's entire premise was centered around story and lore. Even the major boss fights in that game had were done for the story and challenge rather than the stupid loot. I hate WoW and it's stupid fucking fanbase like no one would believe. Them and their stupid fucking game were responsible for Everquest and SWG dying.

Its a bit of a stretch but i regard ff14 has the only mmoJrpg on the market

Where the rpg part is very clearly different from the west

YoshiP has also said multiple times he regards the future of mmos as a game where you can hang out, do the content (both solo and together) and log off until new content is made whereas most if not all mmos try to retain logged in users as much as possible.

>Them and their stupid fucking game were responsible for Everquest and SWG dying.
>responsible and SWG dying.

SWG killed itself.

Overworld is useless 99% of the time.

>you roleplay
>thus it is a rpg
You play as Dante, so DMC is a RPG
You play as a soldier in WW2, so CoD is a RPG
You act as a retard, so Any Forums is a RPG.

>future of mmos as a game where you can hang out, do the content (both solo and together) and log off
Isn't this what MMOs were ALWAYs about though? I spent more time Ragnarok online fucking around and chatting with other players. I'd grind for 2 days then spend the remainder of the week in town chatting to people and making friends.

Should have brought silent oils and prism powders. A dangerous world is more engaging.
