This is a cope by people who don't have friends. There's plenty of titles that are so soul-crushingly bad/boring that they aren't fun with friends either, and there's many that reach some level of fun that are still mediocre enough that they're never worth touching compared to their alternatives. The games people call fun with friends actually do become fun enough to stand out. As a side note--since it can be a matter of confusion for the friendless when it's brought up--the ones that are so shit that they're fun to riff on with friends isn't what people are referring to as being fun with friends either. There's a clear distinction between something that actually becomes fun with friends and something that is just meat for you having fun with your friends. It changes what's actually the activity at play there.
