I think I get his point, the new games ditched the more realistic artstyle for a more cartoony one.
I don't like Nintendo's shift to 2.5D games over pixels but cartoonish models withstanding at least DKC Returns and TF did it the best of any of the new 2D Nintendo games.
I also miss the other animal buddies.

DK Returns games are amazing. Great level design, control and feel great, etc. But even though the art and music is good in them, it doesn't compare to the mood of the original DKC games. They definitely had more soul in that department. Better atmosphere, more humor in the animations and enemies, more interesting environments and characters, etc.
