They recently had an anniversary special on Lemmings, which part of it was to advertise the new lemmings game on mobile. IIRC gameplay was simplified to where you just place powerups on a grid and your lemmings automatically use them when they reach it.

Lemmings ended on a really bad note. Lemmings 3 followed by Lemmings 3D. While 3D isn't awful, Lemmings 3 is.

Windows version I believe was going to have multiplayer, but it was due to 2 problems. 1 window drivers at the time did not allow 2 mouses, and 2 they managed to hook 2 systems together through a special cable for a lan-like setup, but opted to cut the multiplayer because it would require customers to create their own cable. They literally did this roughly 6 months ago. Seeing all these posts of people not even realizing there is a new lemmings game out does speak a lot on how much people cared.

The problem is the lemmings formula is too perfect for a mobile game. No company is gonna look at that gameplay and think "Yes, we should make a proper, non-shitty, non-explotative complete game", it's just too damn easy. It's like Peggle in that respect.
The best you can hope for is some indie making a Lemmings with the serial numbers filed off game, being good at designing Lemmings levels, and then actually finishing it. Well, good luck with that.

the level of precision that is required by later lemmings levels isn't possible on mobile with their touchscreen

Why doesn't someone just make an indie spiritual successor? It's probably a super easy game to program. When the IP owners don't want to do shit with a game formula, indie artists always pick up the slack. They might have to change the abilities around but it could still be doable without getting sued.
