I don't know the exact breakdown but I remember reading an interview that gave a rough map of why it cost so much. It was a combination of the cost of the Saturn version, switching to Dreamcast, and also that amount is for BOTH Shenmue I and II so, it's not like Shenmue 1 by itself cost 70 million.

If SEGA never left console making we would have much more advanced consoles now

Because Sega was, are and will be full of retardeds.

They fell for the marketing team meme.

They are retards but soulful retards

Worth it for the best game ever made

Sega took out loans from the Yakuza who were still in influence in political economics at the time and especially places like casinos/arcades (Sega's holding company has shares in these places)
As payback, Sega is now obligated to make Yakuza games forever.

Advanced compared to what? All the consoles have the same Nvidia or AMD hardware that's on PC too. All of them restricted by the size and TDP. If you knew anything then you'd know the PS5 and XSX are already pushing the limits of what can be done on such form factor. For PC to go only a little father than consoles it utilizes like triple the amount of energy.

retarded take, energy consumption is completely irrelevant and the performance is significantly better, not just a small difference

They just would ok

I understand hyping this game when it came out and how much SEGA was betting in.
But i dont understand any fucking idiot past gen 6 playing this crap and saying "oh wow this game is good"
is literally a really expensive slice-of-life simulator with worst voice acting than RE1

The English dub funny enough was picked specifically because Suzuki felt that it was a perfect normal voice fit.

>It was humbling. What can I say? “Thank you for letting me be part of this project.” Because ultimately it was up to him when they listened to my voice and he just liked the sound of my voice. I told him I could do different things or make different sounds. “Do you want me to do this or that?” And they’d say “No, no, no. We want someone to have their speaking voice.” He wanted to look at the character and think, “If he speaks English what is he going to sound like?” He mainly just liked my voice, the way I said things, and how I did it.
>Let me tell you what. If I died and this is the only thing I’m known for, I’d call it a win. You know what I mean? I just like to do good work. I like to just make people happy. Gazillions of dollars is great, but in the end I’m one of those guys who wants to make good work for people to enjoy. [I’ve] done a lot of theater and one of the reasons why I like that is because you kind of get a weird sort of instant gratification of people on stage because people laugh, people cry, people clap, that kind of thing. I really love that. I love giving a piece of myself to other people. When people tell me their stories about Shenmue — see, because when you do voice over you go in, you do your work, it gets processed, it comes out in the game and you’re slightly detached from that. But when people tell me their stories I’m like, “Aw man, that is amazing,” and people are like “Dude, I got into making games or whatever” and they work at like Blizzard now or EA Games. “I got into games because of Shenmue, and now I make games for a living because I played Shenmue when I was a kid.” […]
>I think about Shenmue a lot, and I think about the people I met on Shenmue — the cool people...I care [about] Shenmue more than other things.

Corey Marshall is the English dub voice actor for Ryo and he's also a number one fan of the series, so supporting the Eng dub will also support Shenmue in the West

>I know that Yu Suzuki wanted very specific actors for the rolls. I can say that he wanted a very specific sound for each character. I also know of the extent of the research that was needed for the game. Teams of people were sent to towns and countrysides to get data on how exactly it should look. Scrupulous notes and lots of pictures were taken. This was done for locations in Japan as well as China. You have to remember for the time this was quite unusual. He wanted to make sure that every detail was correct. He wanted to convey a very specific feel to the game. This was to ensure that the player was transported into this time and space. And I think they were very successful in doing so. As far as forgetting everything right? I had a script the size of a book every day. Even the lines that were repeated he wanted me to say them over again as if I was saying them to that person for the first time. It would be easier of course to record the same line once and then repeat that line digitally. However if I was speaking to a different person I needed to say that same line again. Just in case I said it a little different if I was speaking to an older woman or younger man etc. also the actors got to act together in the same room during important scenes. This was also an usual for voice acting. Again it’s easier to bring in acters individually let them record and go home. But every actor will tell you it’s better when you are acting off of somebody else right next to you. This brought a special dynamic to the scenes. The actors appreciated it and I’m sure the players that as well.
