Outer Wilds or Pathologic 2
Any Forums recommended both funnily enough.
Tales From The Borderlands was great too, despite being a telltale game.
FF7 is the best traditional story telling
Ocarina of time is the best visual storytelling
Kill yourself retard outer wilds barely BARELY has a story
Disco Elysium, now thats a good story driven game
MGS4. It was my entry point into the metal gear franchise, and it was just the most surreal shit ever to hop into a game like that with no context. Eventually I grabbed the legacy collection and played through in the proper order, and when I got back to MGS4, I still had no idea what the fuck was going on. Absolutely incredible experience.
can you play pathologic 2 without playin 1?
>outer wilds barely BARELY has a story
Kentucky Route Zero
Pathologic 2 is a remake of 1, so yes
you should watch the hbomberguy video on 1 tho btw it's genuine kino, a godlike youtube video
have you even played outer wilds. literally the whole game is just story and its delivery is beautiful
This was me with MGSV, except I had the opposite experience. MGS GZ blew me away, then when phantom pain started I was so blown away, then after like 7 missions, nothing was happening and you'd get like super small snippets of context to go do the same thing over and over, and I eventually fizzled out.
I'm sorry about your schizophrenia user
OUTER WILDS GETTING MORE OFFICIAL MUSIC BROS

Yes. Play 2 then look up lore for 1. Bachelor playthrough announced and it's officially going to be a more linear experience with a mutating plague.
Cool. Shame they haven't found a way to incorporate Reprise into the game
ff7 remake
>Nomai Meditation filled the gap between Outer Wilds and Echoes of The Eye
Maybe this is a hint at a future project
traditional methods of narrative storytelling don't tend to work very well in video games, due to the nature of player agency going against a carefully paced and considered story, mechanics that often directly contradict the plot (otherwise known as ludonarrative dissonance), and there's the fact that gameplay will almost always come first which means trying to wrap a good story around the player shooting or stabbing hundreds of enemies, which usually results in Doom-tier stupidity
plus, story is always the first thing to be cut and changed before the game's content itself is touched, since changing a few lines of dialogue is quicker and less expensive than removing assets, levels, AI and so forth
even if the top writing talent wasn't currently being used elsewhere (film, television shows, literature), their efforts would still mostly be wasted on video games since they can't utilize the medium in the same way
it's not really a huge problem, since every medium has its strengths and weaknesses, it just happens to be that plot is the weakness of vidya, although it can perform well in other areas that surround plot, such as atmosphere, worldbuilding and setting, and there's also the unique ability for players to create their own stories in games like Dwarf Fortress or a sandbox game
with all that said, I think the best way to have a compelling 'story' in video games is to do it almost entirely through mechanics, ie Papers Please, which actively entrenches you in the experience of being an immigration inspector through mechanics, something that would be lesser if you were to only read about or watch it unfold
