I think the reason is to minimize app bloat and security holes, though I'm not sure it would matter that much. But they probably know best.

Being able to sign in with a QR code to the browser version is something I didn't know I wanted but absolutely needed.

Also it is waaaay more convenient than answering in game. I hate the popups and pausing my game to reply to a chat I turn it all off and just use the phone app.
