it's not bad due to "toxicity" or anything similar, it's bad because it is horribly autistic in the worst sense possible
imagine tranny-tier speedrunning autism, but instead of them beating the game, their only goal is to beat you as effectively as possible
i will admit that i'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but the fighting game genre absolutely filtered me
i'm not going to put this much effort into a video game, the intrinsic rewards are insufficient

I like how you omit the part where it's usually older, more niche titles people want to play in. The big fighting games are doing fine and selling well, it's harder to find players in any game that isn't the most recent release of a given franchise though.
