I wish "pixelated" didn't become a derogatory term during the 3d boom, I feel like the strict limitations on resolution and palette gave rise to some amazing art the likes of which we just don't see anymore

let's be honest, a lot of those are trash since not only are they hobbyists rather than paid professionals, but quite a lot also use pixel art as a crutch rather than an artstyle so they can make an 8x8 stickman and call it "retro"

Get into retro games and stop playing modern garbage. There are countless 16 and 32 bit games that have what you want. And if you can muster up the courage to learn japanese you're in for a treat.

The problem is that the conditions that made old pixel art soulful don't exist. Artists would try to work around the limitations to get more out of the limited toolset, but modern pixel artists are using an expanded toolset to emulate that limited look and working in that direction just doesn't give the same result.
