My big issue is that, by making him trans, you basically remove his entire character schtick of being a feminine boy who's completely self assured to just make him a generic transexual.
He becomes generic, and loses much of the purpose of his existence as a character.
If they wanted a transexual character, they should have just added one in, as some gears being non-binary and gender fluid would be extremely easy to use as a concept for a transexual.
But instead you have to take a pre-existing character and transplant that onto them.
